Assuming you already have employees on board, how well do you manage them? Do you manage them or are they managing you?
Today, small businesses have to make the most of limited resources, and that includes people.
My definition of managing people is easy; it’s simply to help the people who report directly to you to be the best they can be.
That might sound a bit simplistic, but if you think about it – when they are being the best they can be, fulfilling their role in your business, representing the values of your business towards your customers and each other – wouldn’t you have a great business?
There are many businesses out there where someone is given the title of manager, but not the responsibility, and because of that they end up ‘Bossing’, which is entirely different. Bossing infers a one way street – do as I tell you or else. Don’t get managing and bossing confused. They aren’t the same.
Managing is a delicate balance of toughness and compassion, close relationships and professional distance, partnership and leadership, and a balance between hands-on and hands-off. Many small business owners, when they put on their first employees, feel as if they need to be best friends, but managing is about a balance between a strong work relationship and professional distance
We all come to our businesses with our own ideas and experiences in the art or science of managing. How would you rate yourself so far? Are you effective? Are you getting the results you need? Do you wish you were better at it? Most of us do.
While managing is about helping your staff be the very best they can be, it is also about getting a desired result.
Try this formula and see how you go.
Focus on results:
–Systemise everything you can
–Delegate everything you systemise.
–Measure everything you delegate
–Remember you are dealing with real people.
Getting results is the focus. it’s the “What” of your business.
Systemisation is the “Way” and Delegation is the”Work”.
Until next time….
